If you have been following Foundation for a while, you have probably noticed or heard me talk about how we do not carry Infinite Disc’s molds on our site. As of today at 5pm, that is no longer true. The logic up until this point has been that Infinite is a manufacturer but also a retailer which makes them a competitor. With how hard we work on building our audience through our content and driving that community to our site, why would we risk them leaving to another site?

So what changed?

Back in December, we implemented a post purchase survey on our site. We wanted to hear from our customers why they shopped with us and what they liked and disliked about our store. The results didn’t surprise me at all. What they did do, however, was make me realize that our thought process before was wrong.

The results showed that 80% of return customers are choosing to shop with us because they love our brand and want to support us. Those people are not going to choose another retailer over us unless they carry a disc that we don’t. This is when I started to realize that by choosing to not carry some popular molds because they were “competitors” the only people I was actually hurting were the ones who love our brand but also want to throw those discs. They want to support us but we don’t have the discs they need to do so.

The more I thought through this over the last month, the more I realized that I was just wrong previously. If we build a brand that people love, a site that is easy to use, customer service that genuinely cares, and a business that people are proud to support, then why am I scared our customers are going to leave? If they do, that means that we either are not accomplishing one of those goals or those people were never going to shop with us long term anyways.
